V AUSTRALIA passengers will be able to mingle at one of two bars then lie down flat on their beds when the Virgin Blue international subsidiary starts trans-Pacific .The lie-flat beds and bars are just two of the attractions offered by the airline’s three-class Boeing 777s on direct flights between Sydney and Los Angeles, scheduled to start in December.Qantas and US-based United are the airline’s only direct competitors on t

http://travelhouseuk.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/open-skies-offers-little-gain/

THE proposed “open skies” agreement between Australia and Europe may only offer limited benefit to the Australian tourism industry.Transport Minister Anthony Albanese is to travel to Europe in July for talks with European Union officials about an open-skies agreement.Last week European transport ministers approved a mandate for the European Commission (EC) “to negotiate an EU-wide comprehensive air services agreement with Australia”, Mr Albanese told parliament this week. While Mr Albanese suggests that the mandate is “an important step towards an historic open-skies agreement” which “could deliver greater competition, more flights and lower air fares between Australia and EU countries”, the benefits may well be limited, at least in the near term.
The agreement will cover only Australian and European Airlines, yet not one European airline, except British Airways, serves Australia in its own right.Over the past few decades, KLM, UTA French Airlines (now merged with Air France), Alitalia, Lufthansa, Olympic Airlines, JAT and Lauda Air have withdrawn from the Australian market as they gave way to lower-cost new world carriers Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Cathay Pacific and more recently Emirates.Lufthansa code-shares with Singapore Airlines into Australia, Air France with Qantas, KLM with Malaysia Airlines and Finnair with Cathay Pacific.
While Europe is Australia’s largest travel market, with 4.5 million passengers, the majority travel on airlines other than Qantas and British Airways.Qantas serves only London and Frankfurt, having withdrawn from Paris, Rome, Athens, and Amsterdam mainly because its only long-range aircraft, the 416-seat 747-400, is simply too big to serve any city other than Frankfurt and London. In fact, Qantas is the only major long-range airline that does not have a true long-range 300-seat aircraft in its fleet – a fact that has hobbled its growth and now affected its fuel bill. However, the agreement will benefit Jetstar’s plans to launch European services, although those services will operate through Singapore or Bangkok and must still compete with Asian-based airlines such as Air Asia X, which operates from the Gold Coast and will start services from Perth in November.Qantas is not likely to take advantage of any open-skies agreement until it takes delivery of the 270-seat Boeing 787-9 in 2012 – which is far better suited to the size of the market that open skies would offer. But that aircraft must still operate through a fuel stop such as Singapore, whereas an open-skies deal works best when airlines can offer non-stops.

Mig-21 Fishbed / Soviet

The MiG-21F is a short-range day fighter-interceptor and the first major production version of the popular MiG-21 series. It is but one of many versions of this aircraft that have served in the air arms of many nations around the world. The prototype of the MiG-21 was first flown in 1955 and made its first public appearance during the Soviet Aviation Day display at Moscow's Tushino Airport in June 1956.
During the Vietnam War, NVAF MiG-21s were often used against U.S. aircraft. Between April 26, 1965 and January 8, 1973, USAF F-4s and B-52s downed 68 MiG-21s. More than 30 countries of the world-including nations friendly to the U.S. have flown the MiG-21. At least 15 versions of the MiG-21 have been produced, some outside the Soviet Union. Estimates place the number built at more than 8,000, a production total exceeding that of any other modern jet aircraft.

Mig-17 / NVAF

This deadly Russian fighter earned the respect of U.S. pilots in the war-torn skies over Vietnam. Flown by North Vietnamese pilots, the MiG-17 boasted excellent maneuverability and a heavy cannon armament. First introduced in l951, the MiG-17 has seen combat throughout the world and has been used by more than 40 countries.
However, the MiG-17F's most visible role came during the Vietnam War. The MiG-17 proved the continued worth of automatic cannons in a era of advanced air-to-air missiles. The North Vietnamese Air Force's leading ace and MiG-17 pilot, Col. Toon, was credited with destroying 13 American aircraft before being shot down in 1972 by a U.S. Navy F-4J Phantom II. American flight crews repeatedly stated they feared the North Vietnam's elderly MiG-17s far more than the newer, faster and missile armed MiG-21 Fishbeds.

Falcon 20 / Fed Ex

The Mystere or Falcon 20 and 200 family remains Dassault's most successful business jet program thus far, with more than 500 built. Development of the original Falcon 20 traces back to a joint collaboration between Sud Aviation (which later merged into Aerospatiale) and Dassault in the late 1950s. Prototype construction began in January 1962, leading to a first flight on May 4 1963. This first prototype shared the production aircraft's overall configuration, but differed in the powerplant. The prototype was initially powered by 14.7kN (3300lb) Pratt & Whitney JT12A8 turbojets, whereas production Mystère 20s (or Falcon 20s outside France) were powered with General Electric CF700s. The first GE powered 20 flew on New Year's Day 1965. Throughout the type's production life Aerospatiale remained responsible for building the tail and rear fuselage. Mahogany Wood. Scale 1/48. Wingspan 14 inches, Length 15 inches.

Airlines to keep “a la Carte” pricing; Regardless of oil prices

The drop in oil prices has a direct effect on the long and short term financial outlook for airlines. The difference between buying jet fuel when crude oil is $147 a barrel versus $100 a barrel is $15 billion a year. Airline analyst Gary Chase at Lehman Brothers estimates that even with a recession, the U.S. industry can break even with oil prices in a range of $100 to $105 a barrel.
In addition to these fees, airlines have cut many flights which will cut their expenses and drive up the price of tickets. Some relief from the high cost of flying must come or the U.S. consumer will start exploring cheaper transportation options, which will surely cause many airlines to go out of business.

Financial crisis hits Aussie airlines

AIR travel between the major east coast capitals is no longer booming, as August passenger numbers on the nation’s busiest route, Sydney-Melbourne, were just 0.2 per cent higher than a year ago.Transport Department figures released yesterday suggest business travellers on the so-called “golden triangle” of Sydney-Melbourne-Brisbane may be tightening their belts as the economic crunch bites, reports The Australian. The new figures came as Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon said international passenger demand was falling.”There is lessening in demand in all classes,” Mr Dixon said as he boarded the airline’s first A380 .

“Qantas has held up better than most airlines.”

The lacklustre Sydney-Melbourne growth figures on the corresponding month a year earlier compare with a 2.7 per cent rise in June, a 10.6 per cent jump in May and a 6.3 per cent increase in April.

The government figures show that, while passenger numbers nationwide were up 4.4 per cent in August, the number flying between Brisbane and Sydney rose just 2.1 per cent and passengers travelling between Brisbane and Melbourne fell 5.2 per cent.

Planes were also flying less full, with load factors down from 80.5per cent to 77.6 per cent as increases in capacity outstripped rises in passenger traffic.

The trend appears to be continuing. Sydney airport released passenger numbers for September showing a 0.1per cent overall fall as a 2.3per cent increase in domestic and regional travel was overshadowed by a 4.3 per cent fall in international passengers.

Financial analysts have been warning for some time of a potential softening of corporate travel demand, although airlines insisted it was still holding up.

“The finance sector is a huge user of corporate travel and everyone’s looking at their travel budgets,” one aviation analyst said yesterday.

“It’s really going to hit Qantas hard, I think, because everyone’s looking to … lower transport costs and use telecommuting where they can.

After two years of tinkering (more political than technical we think), Airbus is no closer to taking on Boeing in what is emerging as the sweetest spot in the market. Airbus has a group of amazingly loyal customers. No A350 customers have defected and Airbus has even been able to add customers that already ordered the 787 (Singapore).
*"The A350 is the core of the market," (French industry minister) Loos said. "France would welcome favorably a decision by the board" of EADS to proceed with the plane, Loos told lawmakers Wednesday in Paris. "To make the plane, we need the board to decide on it, and then we need to work with the other countries in EADS, the other countries in Airbus, to find means of support for this big project," he said.
With support like this you would expect EADS to jump into the market - but it has not. Clearly there continues to be faction fighting within EADS that ties Airbus in knots. This is an irrational way to run a business with long lead times and complex projects. How can Airbus get out from under EADS?-------*BLOOMBERG NEWS -- France would like to see Airbus move ahead with developing the A350 to take on The Boeing Co. and is willing to discuss potential assistance from the government, said Francois Loos, the country's industry minister.

EnginesTwo different jet engines are being developed for the F-35

Two different jet engines are being developed for the F-35; the Pratt & Whitney F135 and the General Electric/Rolls-Royce F136. The STOVL versions of both powerplants use the innovative Rolls-Royce LiftSystem, patented by Lockheed Martin and built by Rolls-Royce. This system is more like the Russian Yak-141 and German VJ 101D/E than the preceding generation of STOVL designs, such as the Harrier Jump Jet.The LiftSystem is composed of a lift fan, driveshaft, clutch, 2 roll posts and a "3 Bearing Swivel Module" (3BSM). The 3BSM is a thrust vectoring nozzle which allows the main engine exhaust to be deflected downward at the tail of the aircraft. The lift fan near the front of the aircraft provides a counter-balancing thrust. Somewhat like a vertically mounted turboprop within the forward fuselage, the lift fan is powered by the engine's low-pressure (LP) turbine via a driveshaft and gearbox. Roll control during slow flight is achieved by diverting pressurized air from the LP turbine through wing mounted thrust nozzles called Roll Posts.

Pacific Airlines has lately announced its plan to suspend flights between Ho chi minh city to Da lat and Buon Me Thuot cities from August 2008 due to the oil price rise. The airline said that flights will resume when the situation gets better. Customers who have booked tickets will receive a refund and compensation (VND 50,000 each).Other routes of Pacific Airlines are still operational as usual including three new routes to be opened on June 1 from Hanoi to Danang Hue and Nha trang Pacific Airlines will be rebranding as Jetstar Pacific Airlines as of May 23 and operational under the name of Jetstar Pacific and Jetstar trademark.
